  When I visited in Vienna in 2004, I picked up this doily from a café. I was served a coffee and soda water on a silver oval tray, and underneath was this oval doily. I was absolutely in love. Maybe it was the oval, which is like an egg. Maybe it was the feminine lace-like quality, or maybe it was the the dedication to a superfluous drink tray enhancement. It didn't matter. This spoke to me, and I've kept it in my studio ever since. Incorporating tall, swaying grass, of different varieties, to my front yard is a kinetic installation to which I aspire. They'll be grouped in large dense clumps, so you will see only the grass moving in the wind. Now it's time to investigate varieties! What are your feelings about grass? When I was a kid, my parents never feel I exercised enough. As an incentive, they made up their own jog-a-thon, and would pay me 25 cents every time I made a lap around our 1 acre yard. I did it, and don't remember how much money I made, but I never enjoyed it. Now I love exercising. Go figure. This painting is called "Doubleback Twister," and comes from my love of all shapes biological. I also adore color and forms that float or connect in space. I was a biology minor in college, and I loved looking through the microscope. Looking at cells was like another world! The other day I was looking at a Mexican-designed coffee mug I bought from Tubac, Arizona. This mug has this blue design all over it, which reminds me of a burrito succulent (sedum morganianum). In 2005, my Czech friends took me to this beautiful town in Southern Moravia called Straznice. I had never seen anything like it: They paint flowers on buildings, and have a yearly folk festival! The colors they most often use on buildings are red, green, blue and yellow. When I returned to the USA, I decided to make a painting called "Folk Twister", which represented the feeling of being in this town.   According to the art history book, Dictionary of Subjects & Symbols in Art by James Hall, eggs represent a symbol of creation. This came to be associated with spring festivals of revival and rebirth, and later with Easter. It's definitely a Christian symbol of the Resurrection.
