There are times when paintings can represent a period of time in one's life. For me, this represents the internal discombobulation of January to May of this year (2022). You see, my disabled brother became even more disabled, then got fixed (surgery), then recuperated, and then moved to a new foster care home. Why this matters is that I am the only family member who can advocate for him, so it felt like a real journey. Normally I never "struggle" with a painting, but this one I went over and over again, changing my mind, changing colors, changing shapes. It felt like the time in which I was concerned about my brother was manifesting itself with this piece. Now that I was able to help in getting him resettled into a stable living situation, I can breathe a bit easier. What did I learn from this familial situation? That I am lucky to be able to help my brother, that he teaches me how to ask for what I desire because he is so good at doing this himself, and that I too have ...

It's that time of year again, where eggs will rule the supermarket shelves. Eggs are a big deal this time of year because of course, Easter, but what is behind their symbolism? In Christianity, eggs represent the Resurrection of Christ, in the way a new life emerges from an eggshell. Get this: in the Orthodox tradition, they are painted red to symbolize the blood that Jesus shed on the cross. This egg coloring has continued in modern secular nations. I have chosen the light blue color, akin to a robin's egg. My adoration of the egg shape is for two reasons: the asymmetrical aspect, the oval, and the fact that they represent potential or renewal. I adore this quote by American artist, Helen Frankenthaler. It truly describes the visual experience of looking at abstract art, especially complex ones with lots of shapes and color (like mine). This piece was created while painting at a table overlooking the ocean in Depoe Bay, OR. I often say I can feel what is going on under the water, and having a front row seat definitely helped. When I was seven, my neighbors (the husband was a Royal Rosarian) took me and my brother to a Rose Festival event where Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor was creating the largest sundae ever. (Farrell's was trying to get into the Guiness Book of World Records.) The massive creation had five-gallon vanilla ice cream cylinders stacked upon each other, much like my gouache painting below. This painting is called "Doubleback Twister," and comes from my love of all shapes biological. I also adore color and forms that float or connect in space. I was a biology minor in college, and I loved looking through the microscope. Looking at cells was like another world! In 2005, my Czech friends took me to this beautiful town in Southern Moravia called Straznice. I had never seen anything like it: They paint flowers on buildings, and have a yearly folk festival! The colors they most often use on buildings are red, green, blue and yellow. When I returned to the USA, I decided to make a painting called "Folk Twister", which represented the feeling of being in this town. Nature always provides the best color schemes. "Puff Paradise I" is inspired by the colors of a watermelon: Pink, green and red. Of course the shapes are oval (like a watermelon), but the rest is a playful composition of using biomorphic shapes and architectural swirls. Working small has its advantages. You have an intimate world to control, a small space, where everything is within reach. This size is my comfort zone.
