SHALE GAS Image - Bloomberg Businessweek

Image
Natural gas is the theme. Igniting our economy is the idea. Explosion is the image. A great graphic using radiation, and contrast of similar values to grab our attention. Image source: businessweek.com

Ben HEINE - Digital Circlism

Image
Ben Heine is a multidisciplinary self-taught Belgian artist who creates among other things, portraits using circles of varying sizes and color. Completely excellent form and both dull and bright color. Image source: benheine.com

BRIDAL Face Decoration

Nusja Jone-Our Bride from Kosovo 2.0 on Vimeo . BRIDES from the Trebesh community of Kosovo (about which there is mysteriously little information online) paint and decorate their faces on the day they get married. SUBLIME! (The music in the video, by the way, is "Nusja Jonë" by the Kosovo-Bosnian jazz group the Marimanga Trio.)

SEAQUENCE Music Program

Creating your own SOUND is easy with the SEAQUENCE experimental compositional program. Biological metaphors follow your chosen beats. Highly addictive! Image source: flickr.com

ROSE SKINNER - Installations

Image
Rose Skinner , an Australian installation artist, creates vibrantly hued visual cacophonies of amalgamated objects which creates a delightful, if not jarring visual experience. Her installation of I Wish I Were in Wonderland is an example of my childhood fantasy playroom on acid. Image source: roseskinner.com

RED LEAVES

UNDERwater Sculpture - Jason DECAIRES TAYLOR

Image
Jason DECAIRES TAYLOR creates cement sculptures and submerges them to allow the effects of nature to modify, decorate and beautify their forms. He grew up in Europe and Asia and spent his childhood in Malaysia. Later he became a scuba diving instructor, then received his degree in sculpture and ceramic from the London Institute of Arts in 1998. What I love about his work is the unexpected outcome and the ambivalent nature of sea life which allows what was once smooth and clean to be improved by nature. Nouvelle Vague - Romy SCHNEIDER by Henri-Georges CLOUZOT

Image
This cinematic gem is an excerpt from L"Enfer, a film shot in the early sixties by director Henri-Georges Clouzot. The film's subject, Odette (26 year-old Romy Schneider) is the target of her husband's extreme jealousy. Although the film was never finished, it was presented in 2009 as a full-length semi-documentary by Serge Bromberg . Partly shot in in black-and-white, partly in color, the director and cinematographer break from tradition in their filming techniques (hence part of the Nouvelle Vague movement in France). I love the experimental use of chiaroscuro and the ever changing color toward the second half of the clip. UPDATE and NOTE: The musical artist Beyonce uses this clip as a direct source of inspiration for her video 1 +1 .   Romy Schneider dans l'Enfer - Watch more Videos at Vodpod.

Eva LAKE - August 2011 Exhibition

Image
Eva Lake will show paintings August 4 - 27, 2011 at the Augen Gallery (I also exhibit at this location). Her show title is called "Drape", and not only do the color juxtapositions create pure energy, they also occasionally form a dimensional convex appearance. Eugène Chevreul, an important color theorist, would be proud. Image source: augengallery.com

Layered Frozen Chiffon CAKE

I nearly passed out when I saw this image from Martha Stewart Magazine. The color! The white! The texture! Although the recipe is not yet online (only on newsstands currently), one can still enjoy its striking visual qualities. Image source: marthastewart.com

If one says "Red" – the name of color – and there are fifty people listening, it can be expected that there will be fifty reds in their minds. And one can be sure that all these reds will be very different. ( Josef Albers )

Joe SEPPI's Posters

Image
(Portland, OR) Artist Joe Seppi's self-commissioned poster campaign via his website The Victory Garden of Tomorrow.com and etsy.com is, as he says, "An exercise in blending WPA-era eat-your-peas propaganda with the awe-inspiring 1939 World's Fair (motto: "The World of Tomorrow") and its big-vision, world reshaping ambition." What I love about his posters is their use of color, strong graphic qualities and futuristic elements. Image source: etsy.com/shop/joeseppi

A dripping, sad, monster in need of a haircut is a stand in for a Canterbury, NH farmhouse door.  I might say this image is an excellent example of GESTALT . (One sees a face before perceiving the lamps, wreaths, etc.)

Spread EGO - TJ Norris - GLITTER Painting

Image
TJ Norris , 2010 | 24in x 24 in | glitter on panel My first ever GLITTER PAINTING .  Abstracted and monochromatic, TJ NORRIS ' exhibition called SPREAD EGO inspired my decision to give this medium a try! One would think someone who involves at least 30 artists to create an image of him for a show about himself would have an enormous ego (which we all do, really).  The point, however, is his discomfort with how he looks.  "An acquired taste, " he says of his appearance. Participating ARTISTS making portraits of TJ: Katherine Ace, Rachael Allen, Paul Aponte, Chris Bennett, Jason Berlin, Becca Bernstein, Horia Bobia, G Lewis Clevenger, Palma Corral, Matthew Cosby, Laurie Danial, Nancy Dasenbrock, Sarah Gottesdiener, Matthew Haggett, Ian Henderson, Hector Hernandez, Bobby Jones, Edward Juan, Ann Kendellen, Andrew Klaus, Gabriel Liston, Rae Mahaffey, Brent Marr, Cynthia Mosser, Noah Nakell, Mark Randall, Megan Scheminske, Abi Spring, Sushuma, ...

SEW PSYCHED by Essie

Image
I had never considered appreciating -  or wanting to wear - GREEN NAIL POLISH until I saw this editorial in Marie Claire (11/2010). Essie's SEW PSYCHED is the supposed color, but upon field work in a few retail stores, it appears more jade than moss .  (Essie describes it as cashmere-soft jade pewter .) At least the model's rings are exciting. Image source: monica rose

Candice Smith CORBY's Work

Image
For years I have admired the domestically-focused, self-referential work of Boston-based artist Candice Smith Corby . Working with almost exclusively in water-based media (gouache, acrylic, watercolor), each piece incorporates furniture or interiors objects stacked on top of the artist, or stacked and near her self-portrait.  And since her art is executed mainly on paper, fabric or wall (and almost entire unframed), it gives the viewer close access to her intimate world. I appreciate her ability to whimsically document her domestic frustration. Brooding Mood , 2008 Screen print 22in x 30in

Image
Yvonne Lee Schultz is a German artist who has created porcelain gun replicas of James Bond’s Walther PPK and its contemporary sister, the P99. This Blue Onion Skin porcelain pattern is my favorite (thanks to its asymmetry). I both love and hate the shock factor of such a delicate motif used on a threatening non-functional proxy.
