A friend of mine recently asked me what I stood for. I already knew the answer: I stand for BEAUTY -- how the BEAUTY in my art may help others experience joy and healing. This piece is the sixth in a series titled OVERLAPPING DOILIES. I adore doilies and what they do. They provide a beautiful foundation for an object, whether it be animate or inanimate. I adore this quote by American artist, Helen Frankenthaler. It truly describes the visual experience of looking at abstract art, especially complex ones with lots of shapes and color (like mine). My goal is to give the viewer a rich, and whimsical path to fun and happiness. This piece was created while painting at a table overlooking the ocean in Depoe Bay, OR. I often say I can feel what is going on under the water, and having a front row seat definitely helped. Every so often I'll veer away from my preferred style to see what I can come up with. When I taught drawing at the Art Institute of Portland, I had my students draw eggs with strong chiaroscuro to the various lights and drrks. Incorporating tall, swaying grass, of different varieties, to my front yard is a kinetic installation to which I aspire. They'll be grouped in large dense clumps, so you will see only the grass moving in the wind. Now it's time to investigate varieties! What are your feelings about grass? As I walk around my suburban neighborhood, I notice many home owners have an obsession with the "perfect" grass: fertilized, weed-free, super green. On the opposite end of things, I see crab grass, somehow growing between the pavement and curb with no apparent water source. This is my ode to noticing grass, and grass-like shapes. The ocean is hugely inspirational. I used to stay at a cabin at Depoe Bay, and it looked right over the water. I could even see whales blowing from the window. When I was seven, my neighbors (the husband was a Royal Rosarian) took me and my brother to a Rose Festival event where Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor was creating the largest sundae ever. (Farrell's was trying to get into the Guiness Book of World Records.) The massive creation had five-gallon vanilla ice cream cylinders stacked upon each other, much like my gouache painting below.
