This image is a gouache painting representing a short trip I took around South Moravia (Slovácko) in the Czech Republic with my friend Ivana C. this past summer (2022). It was my dream to drive around and look at the various villages (Strážnice, Louka), and look at the way they paint folk art on actual houses! I love the shapes, the feminine and plant-like qualities, plus how the ornamentation is really in service to the harvest. NOTE: This small region (Slovácko) is in the southwest part of the country and is part of Moravia. It shares a rich cultural heritage of ornament and folk art decoration. I was lucky enough to experience a few towns, and see an exhibition sponsored by the Moravian Glory Foundation. It's safe to say I was blown away by the beauty of their ornamentation. The colors of red, blue, yellow and green also are representative of common colors used in the region. Sometimes when you're on vacation, you take twists and turns, and try the road you never thought you'd take, and it ends up beautifully. You see things and learn things you never thought possible, and realize everything you do is here for you, and your highest good. I feel incredibly lucky to be able to travel, and I am grateful for what I see and learn and the individuals I meet. Visiting South Moravia & Czech Folk Art Styles In the summer of 2005, my Czech friend and her husband (Ivana and Petr C.) took me to see a South Moravian village called Strážnice in the Czech Republic. (Little did I know what was in store.) As an artist who loves European folk art ornamentation and anything whimsical, seeing art painted on architecture seemed like a revelation. I had seen folk art on Swiss mountain villas before, but nothing like this dense, colorful, floral and almost unbridled design. It's safe to say I was in love. It wasn't until 17 years later, in the summer of 2022, that I could return to get a deeper sense of the varying Southern Moravian folk art styles that vary by village, and there are many villages to explore.
