A Pilgrimage to See South Moravian Folk Art - 2022

Image
Visiting South Moravia & Czech Folk Art Styles In the summer of 2005, my Czech friend and her husband (Ivana and Petr C.) took me to see a South Moravian village called Strážnice in the Czech Republic. (Little did I know what was in store.) As an artist who loves European folk art ornamentation and anything whimsical, seeing art painted on architecture seemed like a revelation. I had seen folk art on Swiss mountain villas before, but nothing like this dense, colorful, floral and almost unbridled design. It's safe to say I was in love. It wasn't until 17 years later, in the summer of 2022, that I could return to get a deeper sense of the varying Southern Moravian folk art styles that vary by village, and there are many villages to explore. Painting by Marie Holubíčková (from Strážnice, CZ) South Moravia (also known as Slovácko) (Image by the  Moravsk á Kr á sa  Foundation) The southeast corner of the Czech Republic (or Czechia) is called Moravian Slovácko. Doily Drawing in Blue & What I Stand For

Image
A friend of mine recently asked me what I stood for. I already knew the answer: I stand for BEAUTY -- how the BEAUTY in my art may help others experience joy and healing. This piece is the sixth in a series titled OVERLAPPING DOILIES. I adore doilies and what they do. They provide a beautiful foundation for an object, whether it be animate or inanimate. I love their feminine, decorative qualities. So here's my question for you: What do you stand for? Love, Cynthia ❤️ See my illustrations on my website, and if you could, I would love to know your thoughts on how they could be used commercially: www.cynthiamosser.com/illustrations

Flower & Childhood Memory

Image
When I was seven, my friends and I thought it would be a great idea to jump off of a second floor balcony into the bushes below. I saw them jump and bounce right off, but when I tried it, it was more like a thud. I broke my lower leg bone, and my Dad had to take me to the emergency room. My parents had to also postpone their trip to Tahiti, but in the end, my leg healed and they went on their trip. Love, Cynthia ❤️ More illustrations abound at www.cynthiamosser.com/illustrations

Work in Progress ("Swim Puff {swoop} 2")

Image
Titled "Swim Puff (swoop) 2", this mixed media painting still a WIP (work in progress). I have yet to incorporate some finishing touches, as well as add the clear encaustic layer on top. It's 20 x 21 inches. Thought I would share the progress. Have a colorful day! Cynthia ❤️ See more Swim Puff paintings on my website at: www.cynthiamosser.com/swim-puffs

Design Inspired by a Mexican Folk Art Mug

Image
The other day I was looking at a Mexican-designed coffee mug I bought from Tubac, Arizona. This mug has this blue design all over it, which reminds me of a burrito succulent (sedum morganianum). I have no idea what this represents below. What should I title it? Love, Cynthia❤️ See more folk art-inspired illustrations at: www.cynthiamosser.com/illustrations

Hearts & Hungarian Folk Art

Image
I love Hungarian folk art (especially matyo), and I often see these leaf-like shapes surrounding forms like the one below. I can't say this drawing is exceptionally original,, but love was on my mind. Love, Cynthia 💓 See more illustrations at:  c ynthiamosser.com/illustrations

Elsa MORA - Cuban Paper and Fabric Artist

Image
Elsa MORA, a Cuban-raised artist, creates intricately stitched fabric assemblages, and intricately cut paper works that have a strong connection to folk art. What I love about this piece is the combination of the figure with an illustrated head. Inside the oval it appears to be a window to the mind. And it is my mind to which it is a window! NOTE: I have extensively searched the Internet for an image directly related to the source. I could come up with Elsa Mora and her blog only. http://www.artisaway.com/ Image source: artisaway.com
