Hands & Leaves as a Reminder to Play

Image
As a young child, I creatively adjusted myself so that nobody really knew what I liked. It was a way to stay under the radar, so as not to rock the boat in my family. I also didn't even really know how to play. Now I know how to express myself and play, but it's taken some time. My colorful work is a reflection of play and how play is also possible for you too. May this piece be a reminder that you're safe to play. Slovacko Poof, 2022 | Gouache Painting

Image
This image is a gouache painting representing a short trip I took around South Moravia (Slovácko) in the Czech Republic with my friend Ivana C. this past summer (2022). It was my dream to drive around and look at the various villages (Strážnice, Louka), and look at the way they paint folk art on actual houses! I love the shapes, the feminine and plant-like qualities, plus how the ornamentation is really in service to the harvest. NOTE: This small region (Slovácko) is in the southwest part of the country and is part of Moravia. It shares a rich cultural heritage of ornament and folk art decoration. I was lucky enough to experience a few towns, and see an exhibition sponsored by the Moravian Glory Foundation. It's safe to say I was blown away by the beauty of their ornamentation. The colors of red, blue, yellow and green also are representative of common colors used in the region. Paisley Daisley Painting

There are times when paintings can represent a period of time in one's life. For me, this represents the internal discombobulation of January to May of this year (2022). You see, my disabled brother became even more disabled, then got fixed (surgery), then recuperated, and then moved to a new foster care home. Why this matters is that I am the only family member who can advocate for him, so it felt like a real journey. Normally I never "struggle" with a painting, but this one I went over and over again, changing my mind, changing colors, changing shapes. It felt like the time in which I was concerned about my brother was manifesting itself with this piece. Now that I was able to help in getting him resettled into a stable living situation, I can breathe a bit easier. What did I learn from this familial situation? That I am lucky to be able to help my brother, that he teaches me how to ask for what I desire because he is so good at doing this himself, and that I too have ...
